Characters who can lift Thor’s Hammer

The MCU is currently the most popular movie franchise going, and one of the most significant moments was when Captain America wields Mjonir (Thor’s hammer) in Avengers Endgame. Now, as everyone knows, there’s only a select few who can wield Thor’s hammer, and there’s always been a lot of speculation about what superheroes would be able to wield it. That being said, I saw a question on Twitter that asked which non Marvel characters would be able to lift the hammer and it’s something I had never thought about before. So here is my list of characters who I believe could wield Thor’s hammer.

Before I reveal my list, let’s get into the criteria for the list. As I stated earlier, only a select few can wield Thor’s hammer. The character needs to be strong, competent, and highly respected. The character needs to be brave, possess a strong moral compass, and also have a strong sense of duty. Someone always willing to do what’s right, and sacrifice for the greater good if necessary. Someone who’s shown to be resilient in the face of adversity. Someone who has integrity. Thor is the ruler of Asgard, Mjonir is meant to be the weapon of a king. So the character also needs to show strong leadership qualities such as charisma, interpersonal skills, and the ability to inspire others. The character also needs to exhibit wisdom and good decision making. Also, just to clarify, I will try to not include any superheroes on this list. So let’s get into it.

  • Ron Swanson (Parks and Rec) – Ron Swanson may not have impressive feats of physical strength, but he’s proven his strength in other ways. He has a strong moral code, always willing to do what’s right. He’s a stubborn man, but he’s willing to view multiple perspectives if the case calls for it. He’s extremely competent and resourceful, rarely caught off guard. He’s a man of integrity, rarely resorting to any kind of dishonesty. He’s by far the most respected character on the show. Every other character would be lost without his wisdom and guidance. He’s also incredibly disciplined and strong willed. I believe he could become a formidable warrior with the right training. He would be a strong candidate to wield Mjonir.
  • Jon Snow (GoT) – The last season did him no favors but few characters exemplify bravery and duty more than Jon Snow. Whether it was fighting in the Battle of the Bastards, or fighting white walkers, Jon Snow showed extreme valor and willingness to fight against all odds to carry out his duty and do what’s right. He’s also a more than capable fighter and a leader who can’t help but win people over even when he’s actively trying not to.
  • The Mandalorian – In a universe with space wizards that use laser swords, The Mandalorian, despite his lack of superpowers, is as formidable as anybody in the Star Wars franchise. Every episode he displays his competency by taking on and overcoming various obstacles. He shows extreme bravery and a strong moral code by taking in Grogu (Baby Yoda) despite knowing the might of the Empire would be coming after him. Despite being a loner by nature, he earns the respect and admiration of everyone in his orbit, implying he would be a great leader. Very worthy of Mjonir.
  • Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan) – The scene that best sums up Levi Ackerman is the scene where the Titans are destroying the Eldian forces. Everyone is getting mowed down in a hopeless massacre, and then when all hope was lost and almost literally every man was lost, Levi intervened. Now yes Erwin was the leader that day, but this was the Levi show. He’s impossibly powerful, probably the most dangerous entity in the AoT universe (yes even more than the titans). He showed amazing bravery in the face of intense adversity, willing to fight impossible odds to his last breath. We also see him grow as a leader in later episodes.
  • Alexander Volg Zangief (Hajime No Ippo) – One of the most talented boxers in this series, he displays a tremendous amount of resiliency. He loses his mother (who was his motivation for boxing), he moves to a foreign country to hone his boxing skill, gets cheated out of multiple matches, but he still fights relentlessly. He earns the respect of his peers and eventually becomes champion. He has a somberness about him that indicates he’s been through a lot, but he still carries on. His spirit is pure but he’s willing to do what needs to be done. He’s physically capable, he’s wise beyond his years, and I believe he’d be a good leader. A fitting wielder of Mjonir.
  • Uncle Iroh (Avatar) – In a show with air bending monks and spirit guides, it really says something when your character is widely regarded as the wisest of them all. He was the driving force behind Zuko’s character development and philosophical transformation. As a former general in the fire nation, he’s a natural born leader with a ton of experience. He’s also kind, patient, mature, and extremely relatable making him an easy man to get behind in the case of protecting Earth, Asgard, or just day to day life. He’s also a tank, very physically imposing even in his advanced age. Formerly known as the dragon of the west due to his impressive fire bending skill. Extremely worthy of wielding Mjonir.

Honorable Mention Rengoku (Demon Slayer)

  • I listed Rengoku as an honorable mention because I haven’t been exposed to him as much as the other characters on this list. That being said, the way he was portrayed in the Mugen Train arc reminded me a lot of Thor. He was boisterous, charismatic, and had a hunger for battle. He was able to rally the younger demon slayers even though the odds they faced seemed almost insurmountable. He’s also extremely competent and powerful, he’s possibly the best demon slayer in the show. He single handedly took on an upper rank demon to fulfill his duty to the end.

This is my list. Please let me know who you would add or take off. I think it’s a really interesting topic to discuss.
